27 Down, 25 To Go "The Collected Doug Wright: Canada's Master Cartoonist Volume 1 " (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

Before I read The Collected Doug Wright: Canada's Master Cartoonist Volume 1, I had only seen the cartoonist's name mentioned fleetingly (uut always reverently) in the works of fellow Canadian artists like Seth and Chester Brown. When Drawn and Quarterly released the first volume of his comics, I knew I had to explore the artwork of a cartoonist who had inspired several of my favorite artists.

Physically, the book is stunning. 9 1/2" x 14", and beautifully designed by Seth, the book's red foil cover and large pages do the comics' reproduction justice. Brad MacKay's biographical essay and cartoonist Lynn Johnston's introduction make fine additions to the book, but it is the comics that make the book a treasure. Wright is often compared to Charles Schultz, but his strips have a storytelling charm all their own and it is easy to see why his cartoons are both cherished by readers and an inspiration to a generation of artists.

My next book is George Sprott, by Seth.
