Butler has all the tools as he’s demonstrated in such works as "Countrymen of Bones" (1983) and "A Good Scent From a Strange Mountain" (1992) but he seems to be doing less and less of the dirty work required for narrative cohesion. Not so much a novel, "Hell"’ is a series of freeze frames from the mind of an incisive but increasingly restless writer.
