Atomic Books Comics Preview - January 27th, 2010

In the Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights several new comics and graphic novels released this week.

Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. His blog is The Mobtown Shank.

Afrodisiac
by Brian Maruca / Jim Rugg

Brian Maruca and Jim Rugg, the guys who gave us Street Angel, team back up for this ‘70s blaxploitation send up. Lock up your daughters, this is the graphic novel equivalent of one Baadasssss Song.

Complete World War Robot
by Ashley Wood

Wood is one of the more prolific artists working today, and this project, collecting his previous two World War Robot books, is in development as a movie. The story is an intergalactic humans vs. robots battle (with intrigue and dark humor and action), and the art is pure Wood.

The Hipless Boy
by Sully

If you’re a fan of Adrian Tomine’s Optic Nerve, you’ll like Sully’s The Hipless Boy. This collection of interconnected stories is centered around a straight who happens to live in a hipster neighborhood.

Hotwire Comics Volume 3
by Glenn Head (editor)

It’s been a few years since the last volume of Hotwire Comics, and that is a few years too long. This anthology is the best and closest thing to the beloved and famed underground RAW Comics anthologies since, well, since RAW Comics. The all-star lineup of contributors includes Johnny Ryan, Tim Lane, Michael Kupperman, Mack White, Sam Henderson, Doug Allen, Danny Hellman, R. Sikoryak, Mary Fleener and more! This one is a must!

House Of Mystery Volume 3: The Space Between
by Matthew Sturges / Bill Willingham & various

Volume 3 collects issues 11-15 of one of my favorite ongoing monthly comics. This series takes its name from the classic DC horror comics anthology series and updates its mythology (which also showed up in Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series). The result is an interesting ongoing narrative and anthology hybrid. This volume also features work by Gilbert Hernandez, Neal Adams, Sergio Aragones, Eric Powell and more!
