This Week's Interesting Music Releases (January 12th, 2010)

Vampire Weekend's second album, Contra, is the first highly buzzed release of 2010, which adds Latin American music influences to their mix.

If you saw the film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy'sThe Road, you know how effective Nick Cave and Warren Ellis's soundtrack was to the movie. The soundtrack is in stores tomorrow.

Other albums I can strongly recommend this week are Owen Pallett's final album under the Final Fantasy moniker, Heartland, Laura Veirs' July Flames, and Nana Grizol's Ruth.

For the literary music fan, An American Artist's Tale is the first recording of Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.'s libretto that blends music from Stravinsky with the author's text.

Dengue Fever Presents: Electric Cambodia is an interesting compilation of popular Cambodian music curated by the indie band.

The week's reissues are slim. Two Elvis Costello live performances are on CD for the first time (appropriately titled The Costello Show and The Costello Show 2) both with bonus material. I'll be picking up the vinyl reissue of Uncle Tupelo's Anodyne.

What new music can you recommend this week? What's on your shopping list?
