3 Down, 49 To Go "The Passport (Masks)" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

The Passport is the first book I have read by Nobel laureate Herta Mueller. The story of a German living in Ceausescu's police state in Romania who is anxious to get papers to emigrate. Mueller's gritty, staccato prose is poetic and fits her story perfectly as she brings the characters of a small Romanian town to life in a series of vignettes that magnify the characters' hard lives. Like any impressive work of art, these detailed glimpses come together as a whole to form a much broader statement.

The Passport inspired me not only to read more of Mueller's work, but to also learn more of Ceausescu's reign in Romania.

My next book is Anne Frank: The Book. The Life. The Afterlife, by Francine Prose.
