Atomic Books Comics Preview - February 17th, 2010

In the Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights several new comics and graphic novels released this week.

Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. The Mobtown Shank is his blog.

Astounding Wolf-Man Volume 3
by Robert Kirkman / Jason Howard / Fco Plascencia

Best known for his zombie comic series Walking Dead and his superhero series Invincible, Robert Kirkman also does a fun, frequently overlooked werewolf comic series. This is the third volume, and it’s an enjoyable read for anyone on Team Jacob.

Ignition City Volume 1
by Warren Ellis / Gianluca Pagliarani

Did you know that one of the most prolific and consistently entertaining comics writers just turned 42 this week? Happy birthday Warren! So old. So very, very, old. Ignition City is his steampunk sci-fi epic!

Kick-Ass
by Mark Millar / John Romita, Jr.

Millar's hit series is now collected into book format. This graphic novel is for anyone who ever wanted to be a superhero. It's a realistic look at costumed heroics as only Mark Millar can deliver.

Skim
by Mariko Tamaki / Jillian Tamaki

Brand new in an affordable softcover format! Skim is a curvy Wiccan Goth in an all-girls school in Toronto. The suicide of a friend's boyfriend sets off a series of dramatic complexities including clandestine meetings with teachers, secret crushes, shedding friends, and more. Skim is a pitch-perfect tour de force.

Starman Omnibus Volume 4
by James Robinson / Jerry Ordway / Tony Harris

Starman is one of the best, most overlooked superhero comics of the '90s. Fortunately, DC Comics is giving the series this Omnibus treatment - collecting the 80 issue series into 6 hardcover editions. Jack Knight, a jeans, tennis shoes and leather jacket wearing hero, reluctantly inherits the role of Starman from his father. And in the process of adapting and accepting this responsibility, he becomes an everyman hero that most readers relate to, identify with and root for.
