Atomic Books Comics Preview - February 24th, 2010

In the Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights several new comics and graphic novels released this week.

Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. The Mobtown Shank is his blog.

Almost Silent
by Jason

This beautiful hardcover collects 4 of famed Norwegian cartoonist Jason's out-of-print graphic novels into one handy omnibus-type edition. As the title suggests, these comic stories are mostly wordless. The stories concern a Frankenstein love triangle, Romero-esque zombies, a tale of lost love told in an improvising narrative style and a collection of gag comics.

Meanwhile: Pick Any Path. 3,856 Story Possibilities.
by Jason Shiga

The always inventive Jason Shiga applies the concept of a choose-your-own-adventure style story to the graphic novel format and the result is fantastic. Help Jimmy choose between a mind-reading device, a time travel machine and the Killitron 3000 and from there you must use tabs on the sides of the pages to lead him to success or failure. The outcome is up to you.

Night Business #3
by Benjamin Marra

Ben Marra's Night Business is totally '80s underground. The violence is over the top. The nudity and sex is frequently gratuitous. The city setting is one of corruption, decay, danger and sleaze. And Night Business is totally fun. Printed on good 'ol newsprint - it feels like it's 1982 and you've stumbled across some weirdo comic that's mixed in with the superhero stuff but doesn't belong there – like someone has made some kind of fantastic mistake. Pitch perfect.

Popgun Volume 4
by various

Don't think of this as a comics anthology - no, no, no. Think of it as a graphic mixtape! This fourth volume in the Image Comics series boasts comic short stories from Jeffrey Brown, Jock, Erik Larsen, Jess Fink, Salgood Sam, Jeremy Tinder, and many more. While other anthologies chose themes or angles, the charm of Popgun is that it's wide open. You have new talent, established artists, you have drama, action, comedy, all under one cover.

Sparrow #14: Ashley Wood Volume 3
by Ashley Wood

Sparrow is an ingenious artbook series. The format is affordable, the design appealing, and each volume features a compelling artist. This is the third book Ashley Wood has done for Sparrow.
