10 Down, 42 To Go "Hot Stuff: Disco and the Remaking of American Culture" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

Alice Echols is both an academic and a writer, in fact her Janis Joplin biography Scars of Sweet Paradise is one of my favorite music books for its deeply-researched history of the singer.

With Hot Stuff: Disco and the Remaking of American Culture, turns her eye to disco, the much maligned popular musical movement of the 70s. The book offers cultural insights into the birth of disco, as well as its long-term effects on our society. Echols illustrates the societal impacts of disco on sexism and racism with anecdotes about the artists of the period with exceptional results.

My next book is Lit, by Mary Karr.
