Atomic Books Comics Preview - June 16, 2010

In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.

Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. The Mobtown Shank is his blog, and his comic Said What? is syndicated weekly in the Baltimore Sun's B-Paper.

Billy Hazelnuts And The Crazy Bird
by Tony Millionaire

If you laugh at his Maakies comic strips or enjoyed his Adult Swim cartoon The Drinky Crow Show, then you'll love Tony Millionaire's Billy Hazelnuts. This book is his follow-up to that 2006 Eisner Award winner. Millionaire’s trademark dark humor is accompanied by some of his best artwork which makes for a staggeringly gorgeous book.

Clutch #19: The Lost Years
by Clutch McBastard

Mix the autobiographical comics of someone like Jeffrey Brown and the poetic and minimalist art of John Porcellino, and what you’d get might look quite a lot like Clutch! Clutch #19 collects 5 years of diary comics, adventures and humor. This $8 book collects 320 pages of comics. It's a bargain! I’m not sure how Clutch does it, I’m just glad that he does.

Flesh And Bone
by Julia Gfrorer

Julia is one of my favorite young cartoonists, and not just because of her awesome last name. Her comics are funny, witty, self-deprecating and dark. Flesh and Bone is her take on folk legends with some demonology thrown in for fun.

I Thought You Would Be Funnier
by Shannon Wheeler

Shannon Wheeler has come a long way since his Children With Glue/Too Much Coffee Man days. He's now a New Yorker cartoonist! This book collects some of his never-before published gag comics.

Mineshaft #25
by Everett Rand / Gioia Palmieri

Mineshaft is more than just a snappy, old-fashioned comics fanzine. It's well-put together and great looking, but what sets this zine apart from anything else is the pedigree of the contributors. This issue alone features Robert Crumb, Sophie Crumb, Art Spiegelman, Kim Deitch, Jay Lynch, Jim Blanchard, Pat Moriarity, Carol Tyler and more! This overlooked gem of underground comix is like the fanzine equivalent of Zap Comix.
