Atomic Books Comics Preview - June 30, 2010

In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.

Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. The Mobtown Shank is his blog, and his comic Said What? is syndicated weekly in the Baltimore Sun's B-Paper.

BB Wolf and the 3 LPs
by J.D. Arnold / Rich Koslowski

It's an inverted Big Bad Wolf and the Three Little Pigs tale set in the Mississippi Delta where the pigs are taking the Wolf's property away from him. The result is wolf-ish revenge amidst a world of racism, boozing, and blues. This is a fairy tale classic recast as a blues story.

Curio Cabinet
by John Brodowski

Magnificent pencil drawings flow in and out narratives as deeply layered as the artwork. Funny, and strange, I'd call almost stream-of-consciousness comics if it didn't seem so cleverly planned out. Jason Voorhees, Judas Priest, grown men in homemade squirrel suits and dinosaurs all populate Curio Cabinet.

Diamond Comics #5
by Jason Leivian (editor)

A bright and fun newsprint/tabloid comics anthology with an eye toward more experimental/art comics, Diamond picks up where the sorely missed Paper Rodeo left off. This issue features Benjamin Marra and Derek Ballard among others.

Meat Cake
by Dame Darcy

This gorgeous softcover collection of Dame Darcy's Meat Cake comic series is a thick slice of delicious Victorian romantic, horror, humor with just a hint of Southern gothic. This volume also includes the now-legendary Alan Moore collaboration, "Hungry Is The Heart."

Werewolves of Montpellier
by Jason

After a romantic pursuit goes awry, artist Sven likes to occupy himself by raiding people's homes dressed as a werewolf - figuring the shock of it will give him a few extra moments to escape. What he didn't count on was a society of real werewolves who are none too happy with his exploits. So beautifully drawn and entertaining, Werewolves of Montpellier should make members of Team Jacob consider changing their name to Team Jason.
