Atomic Books Comics Preview - July 14th, 2010

In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.

Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. The Mobtown Shank is his blog, and his comic Said What? is syndicated weekly in the Baltimore Sun's B-Paper.

Batgirl: Batgirl Rising
by Bryan Q. Miller / Lee Garbett / Trevor Scott

This trade collects the first seven issues of the new Batgirl series, featuring the newest Batgirl, Stephanie Brown. If you're a fan of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Bryan Q. Miller delivers a series that has all the charm of that TV show at its best - set in the Batman universe.

Don't Hold Your Breath: Nothing New from Brian Ewing
by Brian Ewing

This full-color, hardcover collects the bold-lined, smoothly designed and darkly themed art rock poster and album cover art of pop-surrealist Brian Ewing. He's done work for The Melvins, Metallica, Queens of the Stone Age, Bad Religion, Warped Tour, The New Yorker and more.

Hi-Fructose #16
by Attaboy / Annie Owens

Hi-Fructose is one of the best and most in-demand magazines that focuses on underground art and pop-surrealists - it's sort of like a higher-end Juxtapoz. Every issue is a cover-to-cover visual feast! #16 features Jeff Soto, Ron English, Sylvia Ji, Barry McGee, Takashi Hinoda and many more.

Pood #1
by various

Recreating the joy of reading comics on old newspapers, Pood gives creators 1 broadsheet size page to display their strips. #1 features work by Jim Rugg, Sara Edward Corbett, Hans Rickheit, Bishakh Som, Tobias Tak, and more.

Revolver GN
by Matt Kindt

This original graphic novel by Matt Kindt tells the story of Sam, a man stuck in two worlds. One day he's stuck in a dead-end job with a boss he hates and a lousy girlfriend. The next day he wakes up to world destroyed by the combination of a pandemic and a dirty bomb. The next day he wakes up, he's back in the regular world again. And so on. Sam is tasked to find a constant between both worlds to undo the damage, but he also has to decide which world he prefers. Which would you choose: lawless apocalypse or soul crushing tedium?
