28 Down, 24 To Go "Star Island" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

I have harbored a fondness for Carl Hiassen's thrillers for years, and Star Island kept that love alive. Filled with the author's trademark pop culture references (the plot revolves around a young Britney Spears-esque pop singer, her entourage, and paparazzi) and dark humor, Hiassen once again delivers a fast-paced, readable mystery that manages to both surprise as well as occasionally horrify.

Star Island's charm is its characters, where other thriller writers are content with one-dimensional cardboard cutouts, Hiassen manages to breathe life into every person in the novel, however ancillary. Everyone has a relevant backstory, and these histories become more relevant as the book progresses, an impressive feat.

My next book is the comics compilation Flight Volume Seven.
