30 Down, 22 To Go "I Curse the River of Time" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

Per Petterson's novel I Curse the River of Time has possibly been recommended to me more often than any other book this year. Friends, booksellers, publishers and book bloggers have raved to me about the book, which always leaves me a bit leery.

Disappointment will have to wait for another title. I hadn't read anything by Per Petterson (but had seen the glowing reviews of his previous books), and I was impressed at his eloquent and powerful prose. Arvid Jansen, the 37-year old protagonist, faces life is at a crossroads, and his introspection reveals one of the year's most intriguing characters.

Petterson writes in Norwegian, but the book 's lyricism is never lost, thanks to the excellent and intuitive translation by Charlotte Barslund.

How much did I Curse the River of Time? I now plan to pick up the rest of his novels, and find the time to fit them into my busy reading schedule.

My next book is Atiq Rahimi's novel Earth and Ashes.
