39 Down, 13 To Go "The Best American Comics 2010" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

Among yearly compilations of all kinds, one of my favorites is the Best American Comics series. Neil Gaiman guest edited this year's edition, and it truly is filled with some excellent comics and excerpts from graphic novels.

Gaiman chose several of my favorite pieces from the last couple of years, including excerpts from Asterios Polyp, Bryan Lee O'Malley's Scott Pilgrim vs. the Universe, and C. Tyler's You'll Never Know. I had read most of the comics in this collection, with the notable exception of Lilli Carre's The Lagoon (which actually enticed me to immediately buy her book). Though Gaiman leans more on established cartoonists, there is much to discover in this book.

If you are looking for an entry point into the world of modern comics and graphic novels, The Best American Comics 2010 is an excellent choice.

My next book is Geoffrey Becker's novel Hot Springs.
