This Week's Interesting Music Releases - October 5th, 2010
To celebrate what would have been John Lennon's 70th birthday Capitol Records is releasing John Lennon: Signature Box. The 11-CD box set that contains all the former Beatle's solo studio albums from 1971-1984, plus two CDs of rarities and a 65 page book and commemorative print.
Double Fantasy Stripped Down contains a remastered edition of Lennon's 1980 album along with a never released "stripped down" production by Yoko Ono and Jack Douglas.
Gimme Some Truth is a box set of his greatest hits collection on four CDs curated by theme. Also available is a single CD greatest hits edition Power To The People: The Hits.
Remastered editions of Lennon's solo albums Imagine, Milk And Honey, Mind Games, Plastic Ono Band, John Lennon: Rock 'N' Roll, John Lennon: Sometime In New York City, and John Lennon: Walls And Bridges are also available this week, however with no bonus content.
Speaking of classic rock, Subterranean Homesick Blues: A Tribute to Bob Dylan's Bringing It All Back Home features Dylan covers by Mirah, Asobi Seksu, Laura Veirs, and others, and is one of the best covers albums I have heard in a while.
Ninja Tune XX Box may be the year's most elegantly packaged release. The 6-CD and 6-7" vinyl single box set celebrates the label's 20th anniversary last month, and is filled with the Ninja Tunes artists' hits as well as new material.
Marnie Stern releases her self-titled album tomorrow, and it is hands down my favorite release of the week. I fell in love with this disc on its first spin, Stern's songwriting is fast approaching the estimable level of her guitar virtuosity. This is one of the year's finest albums.
I can also strongly recommend British Sea Power's Zeus EP, Clinic's Bubblegum, Elizabeth Mitchell's Sunny Day, and Tom Ze's Estudando a Bossa (Nordeste Plaza) from what I have already heard.
It's never to early to start planning your holiday mix CDs, and both The Puppini Sisters' Christmas With the Puppini Sisters and folk singer Kate Rusby's Sweet Bells are wonderful Christmas albums.
Two music DVDs are worth picking up. The Avett Brothers: Live, Volume 3 captures a 2009 Charlotte performance by the band, and Passions Just Like Mine: Morrissey And Fan Culture simply looks wonderful.
