48 Down, 4 To Go "Half a Life" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

Darin Strauss has been one of my favorite fiction authors for years. His novels, particularly Chang and Eng, are ambitious in their scale and wonderfully drawn characters. I never would have guessed that his deepest and most interesting character would be himself.

While driving as a teenager, Strauss hits a bicyclist, and the girl dies. In Half a Life he tells the story of the wreck and its aftermath with startling honesty and sensitivity. One tragic event shaped his life for years, and Strauss discusses its impact as if talking with a trusted best friend.

Half a Life is as powerful, moving, and heartbreaking a book as I have read all year.

My next book is Dolly Freed's book Possum Living.
