49 Down, 3 To Go "Possum Living" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

Possum Living is perfectly subtitled "How to Live Well Without a Job and with (Almost) No Money." Dolly Freed wrote this book about thrift and self-reliance over thirty years ago, but much of it still rings true today. The book is filled with common sense tips about home ownership, farming, diet, and all facets of life. Freed spares no details and even offers detailed recipes for everything from rabbit stew to moonshine. Though some of the book is definitely anachronistic, Freed's unique sense of humor and keen storytelling ability make Possum Living an informative and thought-provoking book about living with less in an age of conspicuous consumption.

This is a new edition of the book, with a foreword by historian David Gates.

My next book is Jennifer Egan's novel A Visit from the Goon Squad.
