In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.
Atomic Books was recently named one of Bizarre Magazine's 51 geekiest places on the planet, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America.
by Dave Cooper
The long-awaited collection of Dave Cooper's awesomely disturbing, pleasingly strange, but profoundly compelling new artwork.
Bound And Gagged
by Tom Neely (editor)
A well-done one-page gag comic is truly a work of art. And this book, edited by Tom Neely, collects these one-pagers from Kim Deitch, Theo Ellsworth, Eamon Espey, Julia Gfrorer, Kaz, Anders Nilson, John Porcellino, Zak Sally, Noah Van Sciver and too many more to mention here.
Denys Wortman's New York: Portrait of the City in the 30s and 40s
by Denys Wortman / James Sturm (editor)
James Sturm presents a rediscovery or an overlooked artist revered by his peers (who just happened to be Walt Disney, Milt Gross and William Steig). Step into a masterfully presented New York of the past and wonder why Wortman’s art has gone forgotten for so long.
by Renee French
Is this an autobiography of an artist dealing with migraines, or is it a fantasy of beasts? Or is it both? Renee's art manages to be simultaneously defined and fuzzy - her technique is unique and masterful.
How to Understand Israel in 60 Days or Less
by Sarah Glidden
A couple years ago, this Sarah's story here was my favorite mini-comic. Then Vertigo smartly signed her, and I've had to wait for this book so I can finish the story of Sarah on a "Birthright Tour" trying to make sense of the Middle East. Her expectations clash with reality and her personal politics face self-defining turmoil. A fascinating, must-read!
