Atomic Books Comics Preview - December 15th, 2010

In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.

Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. The Mobtown Shank is his blog, and his comic Said What? is syndicated weekly in the Baltimore Sun's B-Paper.

Atomic Books was recently named one of Bizarre Magazine's 51 geekiest places on the planet, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America.

Gary: Book 1
by Tyrell Cannon

Tyrell's art is from the Adrian Tomine/Paul Hornschemeier style camp. The story is quiet and creepy - based loosely on the Green River Killer. This is a series by a talent I eagerly look forward to more of.

Mad Woman Of The Sacred Heart
by Alexandro Jorodowsky / Moebius

The story is by cult filmmaker Jodorowsky and the art is by modern genius Moebius. Is the story a journey of madness or is it the second coming of Christ? Is there really a difference?

Ninja Girl
by Garry-Paul Bonesteel

This adorable nearly wordless mini caught me totally by surprise. It reads like a side scrolling video game of Ninja Girl - who runs through fields, malls, buildings, etc. hacking and slashing zombies all the while to get to an appointment. Does she make it? What's the appointment? What happens next? Just read it. Once you do, you'll want to read it over and over.

Snake Oil #06: The Ground Is Soft
by Chuck Forsman

This is Chuck Forsman's best issue of this series. It’s so good it belongs on numerous year and best of lists and deserves to be nominated for comics awards.

The Weird World of Eerie Publications: Comic Gore That Warped Millions of Young Minds
by Mike Howlett (editor)

For fans of bad taste - this beautiful overview looks at the world of lowbrow publisher Eerie Publications.

The Whale
by Aidan Koch

If you liked Blaise Larmee's Young Lions, check out Aidan Koch's The Whale - released by Larmee's new publishing company, Gaze Books. Koch's work is so similar to Larmee's, it makes complete sense that this is the first release from Gaze.

Questions, concerns, comments or gripes – e-mail If there’s a comic I should know about, send it my way at Atomic, c/o Atomic Books 3620 Falls Rd., Baltimore, MD 21211.
