52 Down, 0 To Go "Just Kids" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

These past couple of weeks have been hectic for me, as we packed up and moved our family from Birmingham to Brooklyn. Thankfully, when we started packing, I had Patti Smith's memoir Just Kids to escape to.

I have long been an admirer of Patti Smith's music and poetry, and now her prose. Just Kids transported me into New York of the late 60s and 70s, and Smith's depiction of her relationship with Robert Mapplethorpe as well as her transformation from poet to musician are both lyrical and fascinating.

Just Kids ended up on many "best of 2010" book lists for good reason, this is a compelling portrait not only of Bohemian New York but also a cultural icon and her world.

My first book in the 2010 edition of 52 Books, 52 Weeks is Barry Hannah's posthumous story collection Long, Last, Happy.
