4 Down, 48 To Go "Appetite for Reduction" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

Last month my wife and I moved from Alabama to Brooklyn. In preparation, I culled my book collection from thousands of volumes to hundreds, giving away almost every book I never planned to read again. The one spared genre was our cookbook collection, which inspires us seemingly every day.

Of all current cookbook authors, Isa Chandra Moskowitz is easily my favorite and most trusted. Her books Veganomicon, Vegan with a Vengeance, Vegan Brunch, Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World, and Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar are the most dog-eared and bookmarked cooking references in our library, especially amazing since neither my wife nor I are vegan or vegetarian.

Moskowitz's newest cookbook, Appetite for Reduction: 125 Fast and Filling Low-Fat Vegan Recipes, fulfills its title and then some. As with her other books, the recipes are easily followed and always tasty, and Moskowitz's writing style is approachable and witty. With this book, however, she shares healthy, low-fat recipes (complete with nutritional information for each). These dishes are filled with healthy grains and vegetables. The emphasis is on flavorful meals that come together quickly, and once again, Isa Chandra Moskowitz comes through with another essential cookbook for my kitchen library.

My next book is Frank Brady's new book, Endgame: Bobby Fischer's Remarkable Rise and Fall - from America's Brightest Prodigy to the Edge of Madness.
