8 Down, 44 To Go "While the Women Are Sleeping" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

One of my goals this year is to read more literature in translation, especially short stories, so when Javier Marias's volume of short fiction arrived I enthusiastically dropped everything else and dove in. This collection is a bit uneven, and understandably so, since it covers stories from the breadth of Marias's career, including one written when he was only fourteen. I had not read any of his short fiction, though I adore his novels (Tomorrow in the Battle Think on Me in particular). These stories centering on fate prove an excellent entry point into his work, especially the title story. If you enjoy these stories, I would strongly suggest you read his longer works.

My next book is Natacha Appanah's novel, The Last Brother.
