17 Down, 35 To Go - "The Arrival" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

Shaun Tan's graphic novel The Arrival sat on my bookshelf for over a year. Friends and critics continually raved about the book, and inspired me to finally pick it up.

The Arrival is the rare wordless graphic novel that not only held my attention, but transported me into its world. Its sepia-toned artwork is gorgeously rendered throughout the book, and Tan's tale of one man's attempt to start a new life in a strange country is both compelling and haunting. This is a book for both adults and children to enjoy, and could foster some interesting family discussion.

My next book is Morgan Murphy's cookbook, Southern Living Off the Eaten Path: Favorite Southern Dives and 150 Recipes that Made Them Famous.
