Atomic Books Comics Preview - May 18th, 2011

In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.

Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. The Mobtown Shank is his blog, and his comic Said What? is syndicated weekly in the Baltimore Sun's B-Paper.

Atomic Books was recently named one of Bizarre Magazine's 51 geekiest places on the planet, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America.

Eye of the Majestic Creature
by Leslie Stein

Leslie Stein's comics are a blend of the autobiographical and the fantastic, with a wonderfully psychedelic style that binds the two together delightfully. And early entry for one of the best graphic novels of the year.

Hellblazer: City Of Demons
by Si Spencer / Sean Murphy

John Constantine is hit by a truck. Shortly after, everything gets weird. What are the the doctors in the hospital up to? Are they doctors or something else? Is Constantine even still alive? A decent entry in the horror comic series.

Liar's Kiss
by Eric Skillman / Jhomar Soriano

Another fun noir comic. Nick Archer has a sweet gig with some forbidden benefits. Until his employer turns up dead and one of those "benefits" is the prime suspect.

Paying for It
by Chester Brown

The graphic novel event of, well, the last few weeks easily. Chester Brown is a master of the form. This controversial autobiographical work is a defense of the modern sex work industry, with Brown not just a defender, but a willing participant.

by Winshluss

The Disney classic, this beautiful graphic novel ain't. Winshluss' art is mesmerizing and his rendition of this classic is an intriguing take. You can't thumb through this book and not need to have it.

Sailor Jerry: Tattoo Drawings
by Sailor Jerry Collins

A collection of hundreds the tattoo master's precision line drawings - his last step before going to stencil. Many of these have never been seen before. A must for any flash/tattoo art enthusiast.
