23 Down, 29 To Go - "State of Wonder" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

I hadn't read any of Ann Patchett's fiction before picking up her latest novel, State of Wonder.

Patchett excels at depicting characters facing difficult choices, both moral and personal, in this book set in the Amazon. Her lyrical prose evokes the jungle setting effortlessly and immersively, and her protagonist's pharmaceutical research brings big social and scientific issues into play without ever seeming overbearing. This is a literary mystery that envelops the reader in both character and setting, one that both fans of literary fiction and thrillers will find enthralling.

My next book is the first issue of McSweeney's new food quarterly Lucky Peach.
