Atomic Books Comics Preview - June 22nd, 2011

In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.

Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. The Mobtown Shank is his blog, and his comic Said What? is syndicated weekly in the Baltimore Sun's B-Paper.

Atomic Books was recently named one of Bizarre Magazine's 51 geekiest places on the planet, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America.

Chester 5000 XYV
by Jessica Fink

It's steampunk comics erotica in this delightful graphic novel from Fink. In the Victorian era a scientist builds his wife a robot to keep her occupied and satisfied while he works on his experiments.

TITLE
by Various

I've have been a rather vocal proponent of Dark Horse's comics relaunch of Creepy. It perfectly catches the spirit of the old horror anthology while keeping it fresh and fun. And this book collects the first 4 issues.

Gingerbread Girl
by Paul Tobin / Colleen Coover

26 year old Annah Billips is having a hard time discerning fact from fiction. This book follows her through a night of her life while she tries to discover one last fact about herself. Coover's art is friendly, endearing, and always welcome.

Miss Fury: Sensational Sundays: 1944-1949
by Tarpe Mills / Trina Robbins (editor)

Yet another luscious IDW archival collection of nearly-forgotten comics. This collects strips from the Miss Fury - the first female superhero actually created by a female. Stunning vintage comics.

Papercutter #16
Joey Allison Sayers / Liz Prince / Alexis Frederick-Frost

The newest issue of the best, ongoing mini comic anthology. Stories by Joey Allison Sayers, Liz Prince, and Alexis Frederick-Frost.

So, This Is What It's Come To...
by Liz Prince / Jim Kettner / Leslie Perrine / Ramsey Beyer

I don't know if ya'll know this or not, but it's not uncommon for cartoonists to have dating troubles. So here we have a comics/zine about the trials and tribulations of OK Cupid online dating experiences by 4 cartoonists. Their agony is our joy.

Soldiers Of God
by Kelly Clancy

This is a stunning graphic novel which comments on the pointlessness of religion for the impoverished suffering under a totalitarian regime. Very relevant. Clancy delivers a refreshing and intelligent surprise of a comic.
