Atomic Books Comics Preview - June 29th, 2011

In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.

Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. The Mobtown Shank is his blog, and his comic Said What? is syndicated weekly in the Baltimore Sun's B-Paper.

Atomic Books was recently named one of Bizarre Magazine's 51 geekiest places on the planet, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America.

Daredevil: Yellow
by Jeph Loeb / Tim Sale

Last week I talked about Loeb and Sale's excellent Batman series and their efforts to class up some of Marvel's story telling with Hulk: Gray. This Daredevil story is another example of how good stories in the Marvel Universe can be.

Farm 54
by Galit Seliktar / Gilad Seliktar

These beautiful, semi-autobiographical tales deal with a woman growing up and living in Israel's rural area. These stories, told under the shadow of war, reach out and connect with universal passions.

Forgotten Fantasy Sunday Comics 1900-1915
by Lyonel Feinigner / Winsor McCay / George McManus / Various

Sunday Press Books sure knows how to make a gorgeous book. This oversized hardcover collects Sunday newspaper strips from the early party of the 20th century. The size here is key - because this book recreates classic comics in broadsheet size, as they were meant to be read. This book is the anti-e-book.

I Am Not Of This Planet: The Art Of Gary Arlington
by Gary Arlington

Arlington is credited with opening the first comic shop in the US back in the '60s. This artbook covers his work from the underground comix era through recent work.

Lucille
by Ludovic Debeurme

A young anorexic woman has difficulty with relationships, and Debeurme conveys her story with graceful and elegant linework. This book was named one of the Five Essential Comics at the Angouleme International Comics Festival.
