25 Down, 27 To Go - "Miette: Recipes from San Francisco's Most Charming Pastry Shop" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

Given the choice between sweet and savory, I will almost always choose the savory dish, even desserts. Still, a baker myself, I have a sweet spot (pun intended) for almost all pies, cakes, and tarts.

I was first drawn to Miette: Recipes from San Francisco's Most Charming Pastry Shop in the bookstore by its simple, yet beautiful, cover of a three-decker chocolate cake. Upon opening the book, the stunning food photography combined with the elegant design (including scalloped pages) sold me immediately.

Once home, I started checking out the recipes, which include cakes, tarts, cookies, candies and more, almost every one accompanied by a brilliant photo. As I work thorough the recipes, I have yet to be disappointed. One of the most helpful features of the book is its inclusion of some basic recipes and techniques, so that there is appeal for both novice and experienced bakers.

One caveat: some recipes in the book call for small, odd-shaped pans most bakers may not have (specifically 6"x3" cake pans, 7" tart pans, and 3 1/2" tartlette pans). For me, this turned out to be a bonus, the resulting desserts were perfect for my wife and me.

Miette: Recipes from San Francisco's Most Charming Pastry Shop is one of the year's cookbook surprises for me, as beautiful as its recipes are delectable.

My next book is Jeff Lemire's graphic novel Sweet Tooth Vol. 3 Animal Armies.
