26 Down, 26 To Go - "Sweet Tooth Vol. 3 Animal Armies" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

Jeff Lemire is one of my favorite cartoonists. His graphic novel The Nobody was one of my favorites of 2009, and I count Essex County as one of the comics classics.

Sweet Tooth is his post-apocalyptic series set after a pandemic. Human/animal hybrid children are soon born, and the series focuses one one of these, Gus, born with antlers. While the remains of society try to isolate and subject these hybrids to scientific examination, Gus is in search of a refuge for people like him. The series is at turn violent, sweet, funny, and touching. Lemire takes an outrageous premise (one his publisher calls "a cross between Bambi and Cormac McCarthy’s The Road), and makes it come alive in every issue. In fact, Sweet Tooth is the only comic I buy serially, it's that good.

My next book is Barbara Browning's novel The Correspondence Artist.
