29 Down, 23 To Go - "Paying For It" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)
Over the past couple of years I have been compiling a list of my favorite graphic novels, a daunting task. Five books always head the list, and one of those is Chester Brown's Louis Riel, a biographical look at the life of the 19th century Canadian revolutionary. That volume was my entry point into Brown's work, and since then I have eagerly sought out his work both new and old.
Brown's latest graphic novel Paying for It tackles the big issues of prostitution and romantic love from a distinctly personal perspective.
This admittedly biographical work showcases the cartoonist's skill at conveying complex themes through his art and dialogue, and proves yet again why he is one of the comics masters of our time.
My next book is Banana Yoshimoto's novel The lake.
