Atomic Books Comics Preview - July 6th, 2011

In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.

Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. The Mobtown Shank is his blog, and his comic Said What? is syndicated weekly in the Baltimore Sun's B-Paper.

Atomic Books was recently named one of Bizarre Magazine's 51 geekiest places on the planet, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America.

Flight Volume 8
by various

The newest installment of the gorgeous and popular anthology series that features the illustrated work of animators includes comics by: JP Ahonen, Scott Campbell, Sonny Liew, Leland Myrick, Kean Soo, and many more!

Freshman: Tales of 9th Grade Obsessions, Revelations, and Other Nonsense
by Corinne Mucha

Corinne Mucha is one of my favorite young cartoonists. This book marks somewhat of a departure from her previous work. It's an all ages look at life as a high school freshman. As a school stories book, it rings true and should be required as part of 9th grade orientation.

Snatch Comics Treasury
by various

After Zap Comix, Robert Crumb got together with some of his underground comix buddies like S. Clay Wilson and Robert Williams and did 3 issues of a series called Snatch. Be warned, these comics put the "x" in underground comix.

Wandering Son: Book 1
by Shimura Takako

This literary/alternative manga is about two 5th graders with a secret: one is a boy who wants to be a girl, the other is a girl who wants to be a boy.

X-Files / 30 Days Of Night
by Steve Niles / Adam Jones / Tom Mandrake

In the grand tradition of comics crossovers comes a fun and creepy meeting of the X-Files universe and the 30 Days of Night universe. Scully and Mulder are dispatched to Alaska to investigate cannibalistic murders. Fun ensues.
