30 Down, 22 To Go - "The Lake" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

Banana Yoshimoto's new novel The Lake is typical of her work, which means I loved it. Yoshimoto's skill in creating intricate internal tapestries and believable, quirky characters is especially evident in this book. This story of a painter and her student explores the fragility of relationships in the dreamlike prose that Yoshimoto has become known for.

Translator Michael Emmerich is to be commended for the consistency of his work that truly allows the book to transcend any language barriers.

My next book is Bill Mauldin's comics collection Willie and Joe: The WWII Years.
