31 Down, 21 To Go - "Willie and Joe: The WWII Years" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

Bill Mauldin's comics collection Willie and Joe: The WWII Years collects the Pulitzer-prize winning cartoonist's World War II comics in a two volume boxed set. Mauldin recounts his wartime experiences from 1940 through 1945 in these cartoons that depict the everyday life of foot soldiers. Told with humor and a great depth of sensitivity, these comics offer a human lens to an epic more often expressed in grandiose terms.

Over the past couple of years Fantagraphics has amazed me consistently with its archival releases of seminal cartoonists' work, and Willie and Joe: The WWII Years is yet another fine example.

My next book is Thomas Pletzinger's novel Funeral for a Dog.
