Atomic Books Comics Preview - August 3, 2011

In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.

Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. The Mobtown Shank is his blog, and his comic Said What? is syndicated weekly in the Baltimore Sun's B-Paper.

Atomic Books was recently named one of Bizarre Magazine's 51 geekiest places on the planet, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America.

Drive Into the Sun
by Matt Sundstrom

PDX 100
by Matt Sundstrom

In Drive Into The Sun, illustrator Matt Sundstrom documents his 8 day, 3,700 mile trip from New Hampshire to Portland. There is no narrative, but the details of the illustrations do tell a story. Then, when he gets to Portland, he documents life there in PDX 100 - and again, technically no narrative but you can feel the story in his drawings of buildings, bridges, dive bars, and neighborhoods. Simple but effecting.

Rachel Rising #1
by Terry Moore

The man who brought us Strangers in Paradise has finished his Echo series and is now embarking on a strange new story. Rachel discovers her own murdered boy, her boyfriend is already with another woman, and her purpose in afterlife might just be revenge.

Willie And Joe: Back Home
by Bill Mauldin / Todd DePastino (editor)

Willie And Joe: The WWII Years
by Bill Mauldin / Todd DePastino (editor)

Maudlin's World War 2-era comics were fully realized depictions of combat soldiers because he, like his characters, was in the war. And as much as he conveyed the situation of the American fighting man in this new one-volume softcover collection of The WWII Years, his new, hardcover Back Home collection also poignantly relates the trials of the vet in the post-war years.

Zombie Tales Omnibus: Undead
by various

It's a full-color collection of zombie stories, featuring contributions by Mark Waid, Keith Giffen, Steve Niles, William Mesner-Loebs, Joe R. Lansdale, Fabio Moon, Eduardo Barreto, Lee Moder, Ron Lim, and many others. What more are you looking for?
