Atomic Books Comics Preview - August 31, 2011

In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.

Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. The Mobtown Shank is his blog, and his comic Said What? is syndicated weekly in the Baltimore Sun's B-Paper.

Atomic Books was recently named one of Bizarre Magazine's 51 geekiest places on the planet, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America.

Angel And Faith #1
by Christos Gage / Rebekah Isaacs

Okay, I'll out myself, I' a Buffy nerd. There. I said it. Whew... I feel pretty good. Okay, so this new series picks up after Buffy season 8 ends. I'm excited by the prospect of Dark Horse doing a better job with Angel than the mostly unintelligible mess of a story IDW ran for 40 issues.

Any Empire
by Nate Powell

Powell's follow-up to Swallow Me Whole is a compelling and visually arresting look at the trickle down effects of war and violence.

Creepy Presents Bernie Wrightson
by Bernie Wrightson/various

This beautiful hardcover collects Wrightson's Creepy stories from the '70s and '80s. Including both original works as well as adaptations of Poe, Lovecraft and more. Classic, delicious horror.

Green River Killer: A True Detective Story
by Jeff Jensen / Jonathan Case

I'm a sucker for true crime. I'm even more of a sucker for a serial killer story. This graphic novel is just that - and it's told by the son of a detective involved with the case.

Justice League #1
by Geoff Johns / Jim Lee / Scott Williams

For the superhero folks out there - DC Comics is rebooting their universe. All their comics are starting over at #1, and it all begins here with the Justice League.

Suspect Device
by Josh Bayer (editor)

Ah... finally, a good ol' fashioned, alternative funny book! And this one involves parodies of the comic strip icon Nancy. With work by Box Brown, Lizz Hickey, Scalzo and more. This is the type of comic that I'm always hoping to find. It's so much fun, and I'm just happy living in a world were stuff like this comes out.

Questions, concerns, comments or gripes – e-mail If there’s a comic I should know about, send it my way at Atomic, c/o Atomic Books 3620 Falls Rd., Baltimore, MD 21211.
