34 Down, 18 To Go - "Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams at Home" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

Ice cream is my personal kryptonite. I love visiting ice cream and gelato shops and sampling their wares, but even moreso enjoy creating my own frozen confections at home. Ever since my wife and I received a hand-crank Donvier ice cream maker and Ben and Jerry's recipe book as wedding presents, I have been obsessed with creating delectable frozen dairy confections.

Ben & Jerry's Homemade Ice Cream & Dessert Book has been my golden standard of ice cream recipes until now. A couple of weeks ago The Brooklyn Baker's Kiesha Duffy (see her posts about the book) mentioned a peanut butter ice cream recipe that when made, turned out absolutely heavenly. I immediately picked up Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams at Home, which features the recipe.

Covering every step in a clear and concise manner, this book is an ice cream primer of the first order. Jeni Britton Bauer shares her base recipes for ice cream and frozen yogurt along with variants, and includes the science behind every step. These are complex, flavorful concoctions that are illustrated in easy to follow instructions. Both beginning and expert cooks will benefit from this excellent book. Now I just need to schedule a trip to Columbus, Ohio to compare my creations with the originals...

My next book is Ben Katchor's graphic novel The Cardboard Valise.
