35 Down, 17 To Go - "The Cardboard Valise" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

I have admired Ben Katchor's work ever since reading his comics collection Julius Knipl, Real Estate Photographer. Katchor leverages comics' storytelling advantages as well as any cartoonist today, and this is especially evident in his latest work, The Cardboard Valise.

The strips in this graphic novel are linked by their surrealistic setting, Outer Canthus, and a mysterious suitcase. Katchor's artwork of this off-kilter alternative world is unparalleled, and creates the perfect accompaniment to his poetic and often delightfully absurd tales.

In many ways The Cardboard Valise reminded me of the fiction of Jesse Ball. Like Ball, Katchor excels in creating fantastic worlds that envelop the reader, but never lose touch with our own.

My next book is Simon Garfield's book Just My Type: A Book About Fonts.
