37 Down, 15 To Go - "Habibi" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

In a year filled with impressive graphic novels, Craig Thompson's Habibi stands out as the best I have read. Each panel is intricately drawn and is a striking piece of art on its own. This smart and thought provoking story of two escaped slaves is one of the best graphic novels I have ever read, and one of my favorite books of the year regardless of genre.

I received several e-mails and messages when I posted my personal list of favorite graphic novels, mostly split evenly between my omission of Art Spiegelman's Maus and Thompson's Blankets. Though I enjoyed both books, neither cracked my top eleven. I can assure you that Habibi would definitely be added to that list today.

Read an excerpt from the book at Guernica and see for yourself why Habibi is destined to become a classic of the graphic novel form.

My next book is Osamu Tezuka's graphic novel The Book of Human Insects.
