42 Down, 10 To Go - "The Day Before Happiness" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

At the beginning of this year, I vowed to read more books in translation, and one of the authors I most looked forward to reading was Erri De Luca.

The Day Before Happiness is an innovatively told post-World War II thriller set in Naples. An orphan boy's past is revealed to him in this lyrical book, and postwar Italy is arrestingly captured in these pages.

This slim novel, one of the most moving books I have read all year, has moved De Luca's other works to the top of my to-be-read pile.

My next book is the cookbook Momofuku Milk Bar.
