Atomic Books Comics Preview - November 30th, 2011

In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.

Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. The Mobtown Shank is his blog, and his comic Said What? is syndicated weekly in the Baltimore Sun's B-Paper.

Atomic Books has been named one of Bizarre Magazine's 51 geekiest places on the planet, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America.

The Black Forest
by Various

From out of the hills of Western Pennsylvania comes this lush new collection by the Unicorn Mountain collective. Comics, art and folktales from Theo Ellsworth, Frank Santoro, Sam Gaskin, Rina Ayuyang, and more.

Devastator Quarterly #4
by Geoffrey Golden (editor)

This sharp digest-sized humor quarterly features talent from Adult Swim, The Onion, McSweeney's Marvel & DC and more. This issue also features Jeffrey Brown.

Fuff #0: Come To My Show
by Jeffrey Lewis

Musician Jeffrey Lewis is also a distinguished underground comics artist. The #0 installment of his popular Fuff series features a host of mini-comics show flyers he did from 1998 - 2001.

Mineshaft #27
by Everett Rand / Gioia Palmieri (editors)

By far the best comics-related print publication still ongoing. Each issue of Mineshaft contains an impressive array of illustrative talent. #28 contains work by Robert Crumb, Pat Moriarity, Mary Fleener, Jim Blanchard and more.

Picket Line
by Breena Wiederhoeft

Wiederhoeft constructs a narrative for her graphic novel in the thin no man's land between unpopular land developers who like to come into communities and dictate changes and members of those communities who think they should have a say as to what their neighborhoods look like. It's an all too familiar subject to many of us, and Wiederhoeft handles it well.
