Largehearted WORD Books of the Week - November 2nd, 2011

In the Largehearted Word series, the staff of Brooklyn's WORD bookstore highlights several new books released this week.

WORD is an independent neighborhood bookstore in Greenpoint, the northernmost neighborhood of Brooklyn, that celebrated its fourth anniversary this March. Our primary goal is to be whatever our community needs us to be, which currently means carrying a lot of paperback fiction (especially classics), cookbooks, board books, and absurdly cute cards and stationery. In addition, we're fiends for a good event, from the classic author reading and Q&A to potlucks and a basketball league (and anything set in a bar). We're a small operation, just 1000 square feet and four people, but we read too much, so it all works out. If a weekly dose of WORD here isn't enough for you, follow us on Twitter: @wordbrooklyn.

WORD also hosts the monthly Largehearted Lit reading series, featuring authors who participated in this blog's Book Notes series and musical guests.

It Chooses You
by Miranda July

However you feel about July's fiction and movies, this is fascinating. She spent a summer interviewing people who listed items for sale in the PennySaver, accompanied by a photographer, and the result is a book that is impossible not to get sucked into.

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me (And Other Concerns)
by Mindy Kaling

A random flip through reveals gems like: "This was the problem of living in a post-Sarah Silverman world: lots of young women holding the scepter of inappropriateness did not know how to wield it." Not to mention a two-page chapter entitled '"Hooking Up" Is Confusing.' SOLD.

Decoded
by Jay-Z

We were impressed when this came out in hardcover, and the publisher did one hell of a job on the paperback. Fancy updated cover, additional pages with new songs, and the incredible photography and eye-catching lay-out of the original -- we want someone to give this to us for Christmas, and we're betting some of y'all do too.

Tom Waits: Bad As Me
by Tom Waits

On the other end of the musical spectrum, Tom Waits has more than just new songs for you. ANTI- has released a deluxe combo that includes the new album as well as a book with lyrics, images and photos from the man himself, and a second CD with three unreleased studio session tracks. Completists, rejoice!
