Atomic Books Comics Preview - December 28th, 2011

In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.

Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. The Mobtown Shank is his blog, and his comic Said What? is syndicated weekly in the Baltimore Sun's B-Paper.

Atomic Books has been named one of Bizarre Magazine's 51 geekiest places on the planet, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America.

The Amateurs
by Conor Stechschulte

Conor's story is about the trouble at the butchers when the two brothers who work there arrive to find no meat and can't remember how to do their job. This simplistic fable-like narrative provides the structure for Conor to hang some of his must beautiful artwork to date.

Invisible Forces
by Juliacks

Another "art" comic with more fantastic art. Here, Juliacks' line/ink work wonderfully conveys they psychological state of the protagonist who is retreating into a chaotic inner world. Dense, intense and mesmerizing.

Roots Of The Swamp Thing
by Len Wein / Bernie Wrightson / Nestor Redondo

Before the current successful Swamp Thing revamp, before Alan Moore's masterful deconstruction of the swamp god, Wein's Swamp Thing straddled the line between superhero and horror with the aid of Wrightson's unmatched, exquisite artwork.

Shaky Kane's Monster Truck
by Shaky Kane

Shaky Kane helps us get our kicks out on Route 666. This Image Comics revamp of the Wishbone Studio book boasts more pages as we follow a psychedelic roadtrip over 50 continuous panels. Fun, innovative and creative.

The Small Dog Other
by Brian Blomerth

If you are into Pomeranians and psychedelic underground comics, this is the book for you. It's really weird, man.

Too Much Coffee Man #1
by Shannon Wheeler

Now you can experience the magic of the original Too Much Coffee Man comics (or relive it) with these new reprint editions. Wheeler's alterna-caffeine-addicted hero is a funny, weird and smart read.
