Atomic Books Comics Preview - May 9th, 2012

In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.

Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. The Mobtown Shank is his blog, and his comic Said What? is syndicated weekly in the Baltimore Sun's B-Paper.

Atomic Books has been named one of Bizarre Magazine's 51 geekiest places on the planet, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America.

FLCL Omnibus
by Gainax / Hajime Ueda

The complete oddball manga series collected in one handy edition, with remastered pages. This one is a cult fave.

Manara Erotica Volume 1
by Milo Manara

Dark Horse continues its high-end collection of the works of master Milo Manara (when is someone going to do that with Moebius?). Here they finally get to the first batch of Manara's erotica - AKA "the good stuff".

Megalex: The Complete Story
by Alexandro Jorodowsky / Fred Beltran

And another hardcover collection edition of the comics work of cult filmmaker Jodorowsky. The Anomaly threatens change on the city planet Megalex.

NonNonBa
by Shigeru Mizuki

With mainstream manga being as over as a Strokes record, Drawn & Quarterly continues to find and release gekiga - or serious/literary manga. In NonNonBa, Mizuki blends yokai (spirit monsters) with memoir to create a coming of age story that is also a fascinating look at Japan at a particular moment in history.

Nurse Nurse
by Katie Skelly

It's a psychedelic sci-fi intergalactic nurse story reminiscent of Junko Mizuno. Trippy, fun and playful - Nurse Nurse is too damn adorable to not love.

Space Ducks: An Infinite Comic Book Musical Greatness
by Daniel Johnston

Outsider musician Johnston has long been a comics fan. He's been to my store a few times, always looking for Jack Kirby comics - and you can see Kirby's influence on Johnston's artwork. If you love Johnston - you love is artwork every bit as much as you love his music. So in a way, Space Ducks is like a new Daniel Johnston album. I'm still holding out hope that Marvel will let Johnston take over Captain America to write and draw for a while.
