Alison Bechdel talks to the San Francisco Chronicle about her new graphic memoir Are You My Mother?.

"If a book is therapeutic for the writer, somehow that makes it a lesser book," Bechdel said. "But I do write these books out of a need to work something out for myself. I do feel kind of subtly transformed, more confident, more able to speak freely and believe in what I'm saying, which has always been a struggle for me."
