In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.
Atomic Books has been named one of Bizarre Magazine's 51 geekiest places on the planet, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America.
Bravest Warriors #1
by Joey Comeau / Mike Holmes
The hit cartoon Adventure Time by Pendleton Ward also yielded an awesome comic series that captures the spirit of the show with an indie comics sensibility. Ward's new show also has a new comic series, and the same awesome formula still applies.
How does an up-and-coming celebrity know they've finally arrived? When Mort Drucker does their caricature in MAD Magazine. His satirical artwork has been a consistent and defining feature in America's greatest humor magazine. Here the most recognizable caricaturist of the 20th century handpicks his greatest works from over the past 50 years.
Multiple Warheads: Alphabet To Infinity #1
by by Brandon Graham
Graham (King City) kicks off a new, oddball comic series here - singing cigarettes, werewolf boyfriends, organ hunters - all set in a sci-fi/fantasy Russia. Graham's worlds are always curious and fascinating creations.
Shaolin Cowboy Adventure Magazine #1
by Geof Darrow / Andrew Vachss
Years ago, Darrow had a cult classic comic series on his hands with Shaolin Cowboy. It only lasted 7 issues and was never collected (in English). But now it returns, not as a comic, but in illustrated pulp fiction magazine format.
Totally MAD: 60 Years of Humor, Satire, Stupidity and Stupidity
by The Usual Gang of Idiots
60 years of MAD Magazine - all compressed down into less than 300 pages. Now that's an intense concentration of stupid! Totally MAD is a great way for longtime readers to push their own nostalgia button and it's also a fantastic way to educate younger readers on contributions of one of America's most important magazines.
