Aleksandar Hemon discusses the process of editing the Best European Fiction anthologies at Jacket Copy.

As a matter of fact, English being the lingua franca of today's world, the anthology provides global access to the works of writers not translated in other languages. The Macedonian writer Goce Smilevski's novel "Freud's Sister" has been translated into nearly 30 languages after an excerpt was published in the anthology. I attended a meeting of the directors of European "literature houses" (literary centers common all over the continent, where readings, conferences and meetings take place) where I was told that the anthology allowed them to scout for writers whose works deserved to be introduced to the readers in their respective countries. The "Best European" anthology has opened doors to European literature wherever it's landed, including Europe itself.

A group called Os Kuduristas — "the kuduro ones" — has been bringing kuduro to clubs and spaces across the globe, including Paris, Amsterdam and, most recently, New York and Washington, D.C. But their story is complicated.
