In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.
Atomic Books has been named one of Bizarre Magazine's 51 geekiest places on the planet, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America.
Anarchy Comics: The Complete Collection
by Jay Kinney
Starting in 1978, there was a super-obscure underground but influential comic that was sort of like an anarchist-punk MAD magazine called Anarchy. In 8 years there were 4 issues - and this volume collects them all plus additional, unpublished work.
Burning Building Comix
by Jeffrey Zwirek
Creativly constructed, building-stories related comics are all the thing these days. There's Chris Ware's acclaimed Building Stories, of course. But before that came out, Zwirek was putting out Burning Building Comix minis that were designed to be read in a certain way - each one a look into the apartment of someone in a building that happened to be on fire. The collected hardcover here is also a unique narrative experience.
Calling Dr. Laura: A Graphic Memoir
by Nicole Georges
Imagine being told, as a young child, that your father is dead. Then, years later, a psychic tells you he's not dead. So you ask your family, and they finally come out with the truth - which is he's not dead. Where do you go for help and advice? If you're Nicole Georges, you turn to conservative radio talk show host Dr. Laura. Calling Dr. Laura is both an interesting family mystery as well as a story of understanding one's own identity.
by Lale Westvind
Westvind's Chromazoid is becoming more than just a comics anthology - with issue 2 it firmly stakes its claim as a sharp comics arts magazine. Contributors include Austin English, Grant Reynolds, Ian Reynolds and more. It also includes a mixed CD featuring songs by Tiny Knives, Big Black Clouds, Beach Arabs and more.
MAD Artist Edition
by Harvey Kurtzman / Wally Wood / various
Omigod! I was so happy to see this book, I literally hugged it when it came in. Sure this over-sized hardcover deluxe collection of stories from MAD #1-#18 is worth every freaking penny. Very limited. But very awesome.
