In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.
Atomic Books has been named one of Bizarre Magazine's 51 geekiest places on the planet, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America.
Police Log Comics #1
by Owen Cook
A well-written police log in a local paper can be a thing of poetry. And, depending on where you live, the content and tone of these crime reports can vary wildly. For example, I live in Baltimore. The police log here is very different than Carmel, CA. While ours looks more like The Wire, the Carmel log that Cook turns into a comic strip looks more like something from The Prisoner. Ingenious.
Tales Designed to Thrizzle Volume 2
by Michael Kupperman
Kupperman is one of the funniest comic book creators today. This new collection backs up that claim. It features the return of Twain and Einstein, solving more crimes, and a sequel to Reservoir Dogs. A snappy hardcover in sharp color. And loaded with laffs.
Those Fucking Unicorns
by Sy Wagon
Warning: take the title of this mini comic literally. I love mini comics where someone expertly executes a simple idea (Sad Animals, Girls Don't Poop, etc.) and this comic does just that. It's 16 pages of hot, male-on-male unicorn action. Happy Valentine's Day!
And speaking of Valentine's Day, here's a fun, special DC Comics New 52 superhero romance comic. Wonder Woman works on her feelings for Superman, Catwoman makes a play for Batman, Aquaman shows us how an aquatic king treats his queen, and more! It even includes a bunch of Valentine's Cards in the back to clip and give. My favorites are the Batman and the Swamp Thing cards.
