Atomic Books Comics Preview - July 10, 2013
In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.
Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. The Mobtown Shank is his blog, and his comic Said What? is syndicated weekly in the Baltimore Sun's B-Paper.
Atomic Books has been named one of Bizarre Magazine's 51 geekiest places on the planet, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America.
Adapt #1

The art comics of Jonny Negron get the broadsheet treatment in this gorgeous over-sized newspaper collecting his adaptations of Stanislaw Lem's science fiction and a Matt Seneca essay on hip hop.
Bravest Warriors Volume 1

Pendelton Ward (of Adventure Time fame) has also created a Sci-Fi Youtube cartoon called Bravest Warriors. Like Adventure Time, Bravest Warriors was also turned into a very entertaining comic book series. This volume collects the first four issues.
Deep In The Woods

It's newspaper comics week here at Largehearted Boy. This is the second of three excellent comics printed on newsprint that I'm highlighting this week. Here Noah and Nic create strange, new folktales.
I Think Of Demons / Sticky-Icky-Icky

Box Brown's linework is getting to be as crazy-precise as Chris Ware's and his sense of coloring is every bit as stylistic and dramatic. But where Ware's work is built on sadness, Brown often taps into a weird sort of existential rage that is fascinating, sometimes unpredictable and yet still feels appropriate. Oh yeah, and this is a flip book.
St. Owl's Bay / Wet Swords

The final newsprint comic this week is Hanselmann's weird, funny comic St. Owl's Bay. It deals with an oddball gang of an anthropomorphic owl and bear and a witch on a camping trip. It already sounds like the perfect set up for a joke - "An owl, a bear and a witch all go camping," fill in your own punchline - or better yet, let Hanselmann do it for you. I guarantee his is better.
