Librairie Drawn & Quarterly Books of the Week - July 18, 2013

Librairie Drawn & Quarterly

In the weekly Librairie Drawn & Quarterly Books of the Week, the Montreal bookstore recommends several new works of fiction, art books, and comics.

Librairie Drawn & Quarterly is one of Montreal's premiere independent bookstores.

Every week, Montreal's Librairie Drawn & Quarterly bookstore recommends a selection of new books, including fiction, art books, magazines, and comics.

The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P.

The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P.
by Adelle Waldman

Adelle Waldman sets up shop inside the head of a young male Brooklyn writer whose relationships with women are perhaps less "progressive" than he would like to imagine. Waldman also provides drily comical commentary on the Brooklyn literary scene, where people are regularly judged by the contents of their bookshelves, and the streets and parties are overrun with young, attractive writers working for a variety of important magazines. A snappy summer read.

Cabinet Magazine Issue 49: Death

Cabinet Magazine Issue 49: Death

Cabinet, our favourite curator of the esoteric, the enigmatic, and the nearly-forgotten, brings us the Death issue. Featuring Louis Riel's prison-penned dissertation on monads, explorations of the partnership between death and fashion, funeral candy, the (immortal?) poet Gellu Naum's instructions for not dying, and other morbid ruminations.

I Wear the Black Hat: Grappling With Villains (Real and Imagined)

I Wear the Black Hat: Grappling With Villains (Real and Imagined)
by Chuck Klosterman

Characteristically hard to classify, Klosterman's newest offering once again plumbs the depths of pop culture for a fresh and funny account of contemporary villainy, examining our favourite much-maligned public figures: from Bill Clinton to O.J. to Taylor Swift. Black Hats' off-beat critique is perfect fodder for your next lively dinner party.

Saving the Season: A Cook’s Guide To Home Canning, Pickling, and Preserving

Saving the Season: A Cook’s Guide To Home Canning, Pickling, and Preserving
by Kevin West

This just might be the definitive guide to the world of jams and jellies that we’ve all been looking for: West, a certified Master Food Preserver, pairs lucid how-to's with an erudite sampling of excerpts from art, literature and food writing. An unusually rich and substantial cookbook.

Exclamation Mark

Exclamation Mark
by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Tom Lichtenheld

There is an excellent pun-per-page rate in this story of an out-of-place punctuation mark who must learn to "exclaim" before he can feel comfortable with himself. Long-time collaborators Rosenthal and Lichtenheld once again combine dry humour with earnest affirmations, much to the delight of typographically-minded parents.
